The Water Route is perhaps the most refreshing way to get to know Xativa, once known as «the city of a thousand fountains». This signposted itinerary will reveal the most suggestive corners of the town, through the close relationship it has maintained with water over the centuries.
Xàtiva has had drinking water channels at least since the Islamic period. Altogether in the 17th century there were more than nine hundred canals, an unusual fact for the period for which the city is famous. The fountains were divided into three categories; the real ones, monumental and publicly supported, the neighborhood ones, maintained by the neighbors, and the private ones, scarce and only within the reach of the wealthiest families.
Bring plenty of water (1L), swimsuit dress, sunscreen, shoes , Jacket or sweater and food.
